1. Seollal (Lunar New Year)

Seollal is one of Korea's most important holidays, and it falls on the first day of the lunar calendar, which is based on the moon's cycles. This means that the date of Seollal changes each year according to the lunar calendar! 🌙

During Seollal, Koreans wear hanbok, a traditional Korean costume. The reason for wearing hanbok is to show respect to our ancestors and to receive good fortune as we welcome the new year. 🎎

• Sebae: On Seollal morning, children perform a deep bow to their elders, and in return, they receive money as a gesture of good luck. This is a very important part of the tradition! 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♂️

2. Chuseok (Harvest Festival)

Chuseok is Korea's autumn holiday, and it falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. Chuseok is similar to Thanksgiving in the United States. It's a time to celebrate the harvest and gather with family to give thanks. Many people return to their hometowns to be with family, and during Chuseok, we honor our ancestors and enjoy traditional foods like songpyeon (rice cakes). 🌾

• Ganggangsullae: On the night of Chuseok, people hold hands and form a circle to dance the traditional Ganggangsullae. This dance is meant to celebrate the harvest and wish for good fortune and abundance. 🎶

• Songpyeon (Chuseok): Songpyeon is a traditional food made during Chuseok. These rice cakes are filled with ingredients like sesame seeds, sweet red beans, or mung beans. There’s a fun proverb about songpyeon: "Songpyeon, like children, are best when made with care," meaning that like songpyeon, good results come from putting in effort and care. 🌕

• Hangwa: Hangwa are traditional Korean sweets and snacks made from rice flour and honey. These are typically enjoyed during Seollal and Chuseok. The sweetness symbolizes the hope for a sweet and prosperous year! 🍯
